Monthi Fest celebration 2025

September 12, 2025: Shirva Welfare Association Kuwait (SWAK) celebrated Monthi Fest with traditional Joy & Gaiety.

Mangalorean Catholics around the world celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as Monthi Fest (Feast), with religious fervor and joy.

“Monthi” is the Konkani name for Mount Mother Mary. The Catholic Church assigns birthdates for feasts only to Jesus Christ, St. John the Baptist, and Mother Mary. Other saints’ feast days are usually observed on the date of their death, or a day with special significance in their lives. The Nativity of Mother Mary is celebrated on September 8, exactly nine months after December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

The annual parish feast (vodlem fest) 2003

Although SWAK was established with the primary objective of supporting primary education for underprivileged children in Shirva, over the years the Association has expanded its scope by raising additional funds. As a result, SWAK now supports several other social and welfare initiatives, as detailed below:

1. Saud Sandesh

Saud Sandesh is a quarterly magazine published by the Shirva Parish for private circulation among parishioners in Shirva and abroad. The magazine provides updates on local and international events related to the Shirva Parish and its parishioners.
Since its inception in the early 1990s, the rising costs of printing and publication could not be fully met through local parish contributions alone. Recognizing the importance of maintaining this publication, SWAK decided to bear a major portion of the expenses and continues to provide financial assistance for the regular publication of Saud Sandesh.

2. Poor Children’s Education Fund

Education being the core mission of SWAK, a significant portion of its annual budget is allocated to the Poor Children’s Education Fund. Initially, financial assistance was provided to students from Class I to Class X. At present, this support has been extended to include Pre-Degree and Degree students from Shirva as well.
Students eligible for this assistance are identified and recommended by the heads of Catholic institutions in Shirva, in coordination with the SWAK representative. As approved by the Managing Committee, the funds are utilized for scholarships, school uniforms, textbooks, and other educational needs.

3. Aid for Students in Professional Colleges

SWAK also allocates a portion of its budget to support deserving students from Shirva Parish who secure merit seats in professional colleges but are unable to afford the tuition fees. Depending on the individual case, such students receive partial or full financial support to ensure continuity of their higher education.

4. SWAK Member’s Death Benefit

In the unfortunate event of the death of a SWAK member, financial assistance is provided to the bereaved family as immediate support. This benefit is applicable only to members who have paid their annual subscriptions regularly.

5. SWAK Emergency Fund

An Emergency Fund has been created to provide financial assistance to members facing extreme and unforeseen circumstances. This support is extended with the involvement of a guarantor, who must also be a SWAK member.

6. Electric Connection for Poor Families

SWAK also assists economically weaker families in Shirva by supporting the installation of electric power connections, thereby improving their basic living conditions.
